SOPHIE'S CHOICE
by WILLIAM STYRON
Can you believe it?! This past week has just flown by and, here we are, readily awaiting the next installment of LIBrary’s ‘Book of the Week’! For those of who you at least attempted and, hopefully finished, Murder on the Orient Express I hope you enjoyed the novel and appreciated the recommendation! If you’ve just discovered a passion for crime fiction then, you’re in luck, as I posted just a few of my absolute most treasured crime fiction novels for you to sink your teeth into just a few weeks back!

Today, it’s Mothers Day and I’m optimistic that you’re spending the day treating and pampering the Mother figures in your life because, let’s be honest, they certainly deserve it! Yesterday, I spent the afternoon baking a Victoria Sponge [which ended up looking like a flyer saucer!] which my family and I will devour, along with some tea, in a little while! For the occasion, it is only apt that this week’s ‘Book of the Week’ is one dedicated to the Mum’s out there and, if you think your Mum might like it, pass along the recommendation!

LIBrary’s ‘Book of the Week’ – Sunday 11th March – Sophie’s Choice by William Styron

Sophie’s Choice is yet another story I believe many of you will have seen on screen, or perhaps just recognise the title but, you will not have, as of yet, taken the time to read the actual novel. A classic fiction novel, written as nothing less than to understand the tragedy associated with the Holocaust, Sophie’s Choice is set in America in the post-World War II period, following three Jewish individuals; Stingo, Sophie and Nathan and the stories of their past that eventually drew them together.

Heartbreaking and tragic yet insightful, expressing the themes of death, pain and loss and the depressing enigma that is human life Styron expresses a vital truth to our generation. If you recommend this to your Mum this week, provide her with a box of tissues as the two of you embark upon Styron’s emotional roller-coaster of truths and tales.
